Former Controversial Binghamton Coach Broadus Joins Georgetown Staff

Former Binghamton University men's basketball coach Kevin Broadus is returning to Georgetown.

Broadus, who resigned from BU in October after receiving a $1.2 million settlement, is rejoining John Thompson III's staff as a special assistant. He served as an assistant coach under Thompson from 2004-07.

Under his new title, Broadus will serve as an aide to Thompson but will be not be allowed to conduct off-campus recruiting visits. Under NCAA rules, men's basketball programs are limited to four coaches, including the head coach, and only three may recruit off-campus.

Kenya Hunter, Mike Brennan and Robert Kirby are currently assistant coaches on Thompson's staff.

Broadus was hired as BU's head coach in 2007 and compiled a 37-25 record over two seasons.

In his second season in 2008-09, Broadus guided the Bearcats to a 23-9 record and both the America East Conference regular-season and tournament titles en route to the first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in school history. BU lost to Duke, 86-62, in the first round.

But shortly after the season, a series of player dismissals and arrests followed. Broadus was placed on administrative leave in October 2009, and a year later -- after an NCAA investigation into BU's program closed with no major violations found -- Broadus resigned after reaching a settlement with the university.

Mark Macon has served as BU's head coach since the start of the 2009-10 season.

In 2010, Broadus was the highest-paid state worker in New York with earnings of $1.026 million, a little over $800,000 of that resulting from the settlement.
