Goal Can't Be Brought Down To Regulation Height, Game Postponed

Cibola Beacon (Grants, N.M.)

LAGUNA-ACOMA – The long awaited return for the Laguna-Acoma Hawks will have to wait a few more days. The contest scheduled at the Nest earlier this week will have to be rescheduled after a goal failed to cooperate.

Ramah junior and varsity teams were on the road just as excited as the Hawks to play when the disappointment came. Technicians could not get one of the basketball hoops down to regulation height because of a motor failure.

“We’re in the process of getting the motor replaced as soon as possible,” explained Athletic Director Gerald Horecek. “We’ll return Ramah the favor of having to drive out here by playing there Jan. 15.”

Junior varsity will play Ramah in a make-up contest at 5 p.m. followed by varsity.

The boys hit the road on Thursday night to visit Wingate (8-0) for the second time this year.

Wingate handed the Hawks a sound defeat during the Wingate Classic but Wingate’s Athletic Director Al Martinez suspects Emmett Hunt will be ready.

“The Hawks had a real athletic squad,” commented Martinez, “Its usually never the same story twice. We have got to take care of business. I expect Emmett to play a lot tougher.”

Martinez said he anticipates a crowd of 1,200-1,300 people at the contest. Capacity is 1,700 people in Wingate’s new gym.

“There is only one show in town and people will show up for it,” said Hawks’ Hunt.

The coach was seasoned with over-capacity games at Crownpoint in a distinguished career, but many Hawks had never seen that size of crowd until December’s loss at Wingate.

The Lady Hawks will meet up with Wingate Lady Bears in Wingate tonight in a 7 p.m. varsity showdown. While the Lady Bears (6-5) have not performed as well as their male counterparts, they have encountered Peidra Vista, Navajo Prep and Navajo Pine in their season.

“We’re very as aggressive in our scheduling,” commented Martinez. “Usually teams don’t like to play us.”

The Lady Hawks are coming off an extended break from Dec. 14 when they beat Tohatchi 60-51.
